Program Notes:
This piece was composed in April 2014 and adapted for bass in 2019. It follows the general ABA form of a nocturne, though both of the first two parts contain a development section.  The A section makes use of the octatonic scale, and the B section relaxes somewhat into Ab major. This very intense piece could be considered a prayer without words. “When we do not know what to pray, the Spirit speaks to God for us with feelings that are too deep for words.” Romans 8:26, paraphrased.

The original version was written for violin in 2014 and was adapted for double bass in 2018 at the request of my son, Nathaniel, a bassist.
