Chili & Chocolate – EH

A tango

Instrumentation: English horn & piano

Duration: 4′

Difficulty: Late Intermediate/Early Advanced

Program Notes: I participated in a program with the Wizarding School of Composers that connected composers with oboists and English horn players, where I met Donna E. Peterson. During our first conversation, we discovered we both love tangos. This pleased me very much because I had been envisioning a tango for the English horn to make use of its deep, alluring (might I say sultry?) tone. Donna was excited because she wanted to play something other than beautiful, melancholy melodies and thought a tango might fill a hole in the repertoire. During a workshop, I was encouraged to imagine what the music would taste like, and I immediately thought of chili and chocolate – a flavor I love. While it is not traditionally Argentine, I thought it fit a tango: a velvety rich melody combined with a hot syncopated rhythm.

You can find the oboe version here.
